1 –  Origin of the Name

Kenya – officially the independent Republic of Kenya – is a relatively new country formed only in 1963. Its name can be traced back to one of the country’s most beautiful landmarks, Mount Kenya. The mountain is often capped with snow, which led local indigenous people to refer to it as “the mount that shines”. In their language, “Kenia” translates to “glitter” or “shine” and this is where the country takes its name from.

 

2- Languages of Kenya

Swahili is the most widely spoken language in Kenya and the official national language, together with English. Kenya is very rich in ethnic diversity and within its borders, an incredible number of 68 languages are spoken. Many of these belong to the Nigo-Congo or Nilo-Saharan group. Some people even speak Somali, Arabic, and Hindi!

 

3 – Lamu Old Town

Lamu Old Town is a small island in Kenya and a perfect example of Swahili architecture, which has been a World Heritage Site since 2001. In Lamu Old Town, you will be able to spot beautiful courtyards, spacious verandas, and exquisitely carved wooden doors. No cars are allowed on the island, meaning that residents need to walk, take a boat, or use a donkey if they need transportation.

4 –  The Big Five

Did you know that Kenya is home to the Big Five? These are the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot: Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Kaffir Buffalo. Today the term refers to seeing the big five, rather than hunting them. Thanks to conservation efforts put in place since 1997, it has become much easier to spot one of these four magnificent animals during a Safari!

5 – Kenyan reserves 

There are more than 50 reserves and parks across Kenya. Amboseli Park is the perfect place to admire majestic herds of elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro looking at you from afar. Kenya is also home to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, where you can witness the Wildebeest Migration. Over two million animals migrate from Tanzania to Kenya each year in search of lush new grass.
